It was the Citadel of Cholas, Pallavas and Pandyas and Hampi of Vijayanagar empire. The 13th century temple complex at Srirangam with its 21 gopurams is located on an island in the Kaveri river. The town's most famous land mark is theRock Fort Temple. In the vicinity are caves with fine frescoes, pre-historic burial grounds and old churches. Sri Jambukeswara Temple, Natharvala Daragh (tomb of Nathher) and the museum also attract tourists.
